The Lord of Success The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana puja.

>The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse.

How Ganesha Got His Head The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity, as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Once goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy's head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name 'Ganapati'. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture.

"Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakotee Sama Prabha Nirvighnam kuru mey Deva, Sarva kaaryeshu Sarvadaa" (O Lord Ganesha of Large body, curved trunk, with the brilliance of a million suns, please make all my work free of obstacles.)

Ganesh and Lord Vishnu One day, Vishnu found out that his Valamburi Shankha had disappeared. He felt himself very annoyed. After some time, he heard the typical sound of a conch far away and recognized immediately that it was his own instrument. The sound came from the Mount Kailash.

He meditated on Lord Shiva who came in front of him and declared that if he wanted to get his conch back, he had first to address a invocation to god Valamburi Ganesh (a Ganesh form with a right-turned trunk). Thus, Vishnu performed the puja and Ganesh sent back the conch to his owner who was very happy to recover it. One can surely find other legends. If you know any new one, please let us know it !

Ganesh and Lord Shiva

One says that neither peace nor war action, nor daily business can succeed unless Ganesh has previously been worshipped. This is not only true for human beings, but also for celestial creatures. When Ganesh appeared, as the son born from Shiva's mind, the later decided that Ganesh should be worshipped by anybody wishing to get success. Even worshipping other gods would be inefficient if prior worship to Ganesh had not been achieved. Thus, when Shiva left to fight the demons of the Tripura city, he forgot his own rule and rushed to the battle. However, when he embarked on his carriage, the wheel peg broke and the car was stopped. Abashed that such an accident could happen to him, Shiva realized that he had forgotten to pray Ganesh before his departure, and this was the cause of the obstacle... Thus, he worshipped his son's name and could proceed to the Tripurâtanka battle which he won successfully

The origin of the total universe is sound. The first basic sound or knowledge is self existent, ever lasting and full of happiness, full of spirit. The pictorial form of this original soundis OM and an idol of Ganapati is a symbolic form of OM. All the matter is created from the original sound. (Matter is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons) atoms which are. It means original soul is present partly in each and everything and it is the ultimate supreme knowledge means it is the Brahma and. The Brahma (Lord Ganesha) controls from birth till death.

(Oh Lord Ganesha) protect me. Protect the speaker, protect the listener, protect the donor, protect the sustainer and protect the learner and the teacher. Protect me from West direction, protect me from East, protect me from North and protect me from South. Protect me from top, protect me from bottom. Protect me from all sides and from surrounding.Lord Ganesha you protect me from all the obstacles when I am praising about your appearance, when I am listening about your merits/qualities. When I am passing the merit of your worshipping to others you protect me. When I am learning your worshipping from the Guru you protect me. The obstacles which will come across in my devotional worshipping you protect them from East, West, North, South and other surrounding/directions.

You are the real speech and you are the real awakening. You are the real spirit of joy. You are the real universal divine knowledge. You are the incomparable everlasting real supreme joy. Twam Chatwari Wak Padani || 5 || The whole world is produced from you. The whole world exists because of you. The whole world merged into you. The whole world again one can experience in only you. You are the Earth, water, air, fire and sky (the panchamahabhutas-the five elements). You are the four states of speeches. Sounded soul which is the origin of the Lord Ganesha is the self existent everlasting unexpressed total universal divine knowledge. The three states creation, maintenance (taking care) and destruction are originated from Lord Ganesha (Matter is originated from sound. The protons, neutrons and electrons are made up of atom. Atom is made from matter.) Proton, the creator (God Brahma), neutron the care-taker (God Vishnu) and electron the destructor (God Shiva). The five elements are originated from Lord Ganesha. From Ether the air is originated, from air the fire is originated, from fire the water is originated, from water the earth is originated. A human being is also originated from these five elements by processing cosmic energy. Lord Ganesha is the self existent original sounded soul. The knowledge of sound is visible or invisible. We can hear it but cannot see or feel it. Lord Ganesha (sound) is soul and the universe is the body. The source of words is from Lord Ganesha-the original sound. The four states of speeches are para, pashyanti, madhyama and vaikhari. The place of para is deep down inside the region of naval. The place of pashyanti is in the heart. The 'Madhyanma' is the throat and 'Vaikhari' is the movement of tongue and lips. It means the presence of Lord Ganesha (sound) is present in all the objects in the world.

You are beyond the three human qualities (Raj, Satva, and Tam). You are beyond the three human states (waking, dreaming and deep sleep). You are beyond the three states of bodies (gross, stable and causal). You constantly exist in the place 'Muladhara' in human body. You are the three powers/Shakti (required for creation, preservation and destruction). The sages always meditate on Lord Ganesha. You are Brahma, you are Vishnu, you are Rudra, you are Indra, you are Agni/God of Fire, you are Vayu/God of Air, you are Surya/Sun, you are Chandra/Moon, you are the Brahma (an organism from all living being) and the Earth, the Sky, the Heaven and the OM.Human being has three types of qualities- Satva, Raj, and Tam. Satva means Satvik means pure, holy or God fearing. A person, who is satvik, has always pure, noble clear thoughts. He is always well behaved well mannered thinking for others. Any type of bad elements could not disturb him. 'Rajogna' means passionate. A person always thinks about what profit he will get if will do anything. He always accepts positive results as per his thinking. If he doesn't achieve it he gets disturb. Could not keep control on his thoughts and mind. 'Tamasi' means hot headed irascible. A person is very hot tempered, selfish, his thoughts and his world are around eating, drinking, sleeping.They hurt to others; never take care for anybodies feelings and duties towards anybody. Lord Ganesha is beyond these three gunas. Lord Ganesha always exists in place of 'Muladhara'. According to the yoga there are seven 'Chakras'(states) in human body. These 'Chakras' are situated in various parts of the body. correct decision power, through the power of kundalini which is in the 'Muladhara'. Lord Ganesha the supreme power is situated in 'Muladhara'.

Having recited the letter 'Ga' the first letter of 'Ganadhim' in the beginning, followed by the first alphabet 'A' and thereafter a dot means a crescent and with the sacred 'Om' up to these. This is the way of complete the pronunciation. 'Gakara' is the first part 'Akara' is the middle part and a dot 'anuswar' is the last part and 'bindu' is the latter form (pronunciation) .This is the 'Ganesh Vidya'(knowledge about Lord Ganesha) of Gananka Rishi (a sage) Niert Gayatri is its meter. 'Ganapati' is the God and symbolic form in words is 'OM Gam Ganapataye Namaha'. The word Gam having the following three parts, 1) ga 2) a 3) a dot above the letter to denote the nasal sound.

Shrushtyadou Prakrute Purushatparam | Evam Dhyayati Yo Nityam Sa Yogi Yoginam Varah || 9 ||

First Nam mantra, then one letter mantra, then Gayatri mantra. After finishing these three mantras a description of Ganesh idol for meditation is said as follows, Who has one tusk(on right side), who has four hands, in upper right hand who is holding noose, in left upper hand goad. In lower left hand, who is holding elephant's tooth(ekadanta), right lower hand is giving blessings, granting boon, having the mouse as him emblem, red in color, who is having big stomach, whose ears are like a small sift pan, who is wearing red colored cloths, who's body is smeared with red sandalwood paste, who is worshipped with red flowers, who is always does favor and keeps kindness towards his devotees, who created this world, who is everlasting and who is the cause of the universe, who is beyond the primordial energy and individual soul. Whoever meditates on him, always be a yogi and is the best amongst the yogis.

Lambodaraya-Ekadantaya Vighnashine Shivasutaya Shri Varadamurtaye Namo Namaha || 10 ||

Salutation to the Lord of gods. Salutation to Ganapati (the supreme authority of total divine knowledge). Salutation to leader or chief of the soldiers and sages. Salutation to the big bellied (Lambodar), who is having one tusk, Salutation to Ekadanta. Again and again Salutation to God Shiva's son who destroys all obstacles and Varadmurti. A lord who always give blessings to his devotees.

Ganesha

With an elephant head and a human body, a mixture of human and animal, it represents the power of the Supreme Being. It symbolizes the ideals of perfection as conceived by Hindu sages, illustrated by philosophical concepts deeply meaningful. His vehicle is a mouse.
As the power of the Supreme Being, it is able to remove all obstacles and grant success in human endeavors, and it is for this reason that Hindus pay homage before starting any business, religious, spiritual or worldly. His image is installed in almost all houses. With a benevolent character, it removes barriers, provides wisdom.

1 - Symbolismede Ganesh

The elephant head:the elephant is the largest vertebrate in the world, considered the most solid, the most powerful. He is a vegetarian: his power is even more beneficial. His huge head symbolizes wisdom, understanding and discernment that man must possess to attain perfection in life.

The wide mouth represents the natural human desire for worldly pleasures.

The large ears signify that a perfect person has a great ability to listen to others and assimilate ideas. His ears are compared to a woven basket to filter the information received, keeping only those that are essential.

The trunk: the human body has no instrument with a scope as wide, capable of uprooting a tree, but also pick up a needle. The mind of man must be strong enough to overcome the ups and downs in the world, but delicate enough to explore the subtle inner world reign. It is through his trunk Ganesh removes obstacles. This is the body's most active and skilful. It is shown sideways to indicate active power.

Both defenses are the two aspects of human nature, emotions and wisdom, or the heart and mind. The defense is the reason right, left emotions. It is broken to indicate that man must conquer emotions with wisdom to attain perfection. Popular epithet of this deity is "ekdant", meaning "defense." This symbolizes that after all the information gathered through its sense organs, man must make a decision and do not hesitate: give full attention in one direction only, unwavering suggestions from emotions.

The eyes of the elephant are known to perceive objects twice bigger than they really are, as through a magnifying glass. They have a scanner to a view in which nothing escapes. Interpretation indicates that the man who grew up in wealth and wisdom must collect the other two times bigger than him abandon his pride achieve humility.

The human body:it contains a human heart, a symbol of
compassion and love.

The four arms symbolize omnipresence and omnipotence.
The left side, attached to the emotion, it takes an ax, meaning
that man must cut his attachment to pleasure. The right side,
the lotus symbolizes the perfection attained by the detachment,

the lotus grows in muddy water and is immaculate. Thus the man should
enjoy the world.

Some are also in the four arms of the four castes based on Hindu Dharm:
hand giving the blessing is dedicated to the perpetuation of knowledge,
the Brahmans; placed on the books tells Kshatrias,
dedicated to the defense and political power, the powerful
must not despise the knowledge to use discernment in keeping
the country the hand holding the sting is the caste devoted
to commerce, production of goods, Véshias. She tells them
that they should use the stimulus to control gain.
The predominance of the desire for wealth leads
to problems in society. Ganesh says that money is only a means,
not an end. The trap held in the fourth hand to indicate they are not Sudra free service dedicated to the previous three castes. The four also symbolizes the four Vedas.

The big belly symbolizes the large capacity of absorption and digestion necessary to deal with pleasant and unpleasant experiences of the world, and receive all the information contained in these experiments. The circle is a symbol of the universe. The belly of Ganesh, by its roundness symbolizes the cauldron which all the events of the emerging world.

Mouse:

The smallest vertebrate associated with larger reminded that the animal kingdom is well covered, and infers a God that Aboriginal origin. The mouse symbolizes the ego that can nibble all of which is good and noble in a person. Sitting at the feet of Ganesh, it infers that the perfect man has conquered his ego. The mouse is the vehicle of Ganesh: the conquest of the ego leads to knowledge. Sometimes the mouse looks a dish laddu, but without touching it: a purified ego lives in the world without being affected by temptations.

2 - The birth of Ganesh, his wisdom legend.

Birth of Ganesh Ji
Parvati created Ganesha with a piece of his flesh - or a clod of earth - so that mounts guard at her door while she was taking a bath. As Ganesh Ji Shiuw prevented from entering, it furiously cut off his head. Seeing the distress of Parvati, he promised to restore life to his son laying on its trunk head first meet he be sleeping with the head turned to the north. It was an elephant.

Wisdom of Ganesh Ji
Ganesh Ji entered into an argument with his brother Lord Kartikeya, each claiming to be the oldest, and therefore to be married first. They represent the entire manifested universe! "Thus the dispute was resolved in his favor.

3 - Moments of worship Ganesh

Brahm muhurt
Time (muhurt) allotted to the meditation on Ganesh Ji is the "Brahm Muhurt", two hours before dawn.

Ganesh Chaturthi
The day of the year dedicated to him is the fourth day of waxing moon of each lunar month, and particularly that of Bhadrapad (September-October), "Ganesh chaturti." Ganesh Ji's birthday is celebrated throughout India. Venerated images of Ganesh specially made for this occasion. These images in clay sometimes up to 8 meters high are installed in homes, venerated for two to eight days and finally led into procession and immersed in water, river or lake. He was offered coconuts and sweets (sweet flour balls). This is the day the ritual inauguration of Ramlila takes place .at the Pakki, with the worship of Ganesh and singing the first seven dohas the
Sacred Lake of the Acts of Ram.

According to Indian religious scripits Ganesha divine vehicle, is t mouse or mooshikam which represents wisdom, talent and intelligence. It epitomise minute investigation of a cryptic subject.Thus, it is also a symbol of ignorance that is dominant in darkness and fears light and knowledge. As the vehicle of Lord Ganesha, a mouse teaches us to remain ever vigilant and to illuminate the inner self with the light of knowledge.

Both Ganesha and Mooshak love modaka, a sweet dish traditionally served during both worship services. The Mooshak usually depicted as very low compared to Ganesha, in contrast to depictions of vehicles of other deities. However, it was once a traditional Maharashtrian art to represent Mooshak big as a mouse, and for Ganesha to be mounted on the horse.Yet as another interpretation says that the mouse (or Mushika Akhu) represents the ego spirit of all his desires and the pride of the individual. Ganesha, riding atop the mouse, becomes the master (not slave) of these tendencies, indicating the power of the spirit and the schools have discretion over the mind. Moreover, the mouse (extremely voracious by nature) is often depicted next to a plate of sweets with his eyes turned toward Ganesha, while standing firmly on a piece of food between his legs, as if waiting for one of Ganesha. This is the spirit that was totally dependent on the senior faculty of the mind, the mind under strict supervision, which determines Ganesha and sight of food, unless you have permission.

Such are the slogans that fill the air. The meaning of this slogan is :

"Father Ganapati, come again
Auspicious one, come again."
And amidst the clash of gongs and cymbals, a crowd maddened in the religious fervour chants such slogans. This is the common spectacle in the streets of Bombay and other towns of Maharashtra amidst the Bhadrapad month (Aug-Sept) after the Fourth Day of the bright half.
Although the Fourth Day of the bright half of every lunar month is believed to be the day of Lord Ganesh, the Magh (Jan-Feb.), Bhadrapad (Aug-Sept) and the full moon day of Vaishaakh are held to be the special days for Lord Ganesha's worship.

Lord Ganesh is Mangalmoorti, Vighneshwar and the Ganapati-that is, the Lord is the personification of all that is auspicious, the Lord of all the troubles and the head of all the 'Ganas'. All these days, if observed with full ritual worship and full faith definitely ensure welfare of the devotees and grants their desires-so declare the Shastras or the scriptures.

Mantras Lord Ganesha and Symbolism of Lord Shiva

वक्रतुंड महाकाय कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभ ।

निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

"Oh! Lord (Ganesha), of huge body and curved elepha

विद्यारंभे विवाहे च प्रवेशे निर्गमे तथा ।

संग्रामे संकटे चैव विघ्नस्तस्य न जायते ॥

Sumukha, Ekadanta, Kapila, Gajakarnaka, Lambodara, Vikata, Vighnanaasha, Ganaadhipa, Dhuumraketu, Ganaadhyaksha, Bhaalachandra, Gajaanana -

No obstacles will come in the way of one who reads or listens to these 12 names of Lord Ganesha at the beginning of education, at the time of marriage, while entering or exiting anything, during a battle or calamity.

शुक्लाम्बरधरं देवं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् ।

प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥

"In order to remove all obstacles, one should meditate on (the Lord Ganesha) as wearing a white garment, as having the complexion like the moon, and having four arms and a pleasant countenance."

मूषिकवाहन् मोदकहस्त चामरकर्ण विलम्बित सूत्र ।

वामनरूप महेश्वरपुत्र विघ्नविनायक पाद नमस्ते ॥

"Oh God who has the mouse as his vehicle, and the sweet modhaka (rice ball) in your hand, whose ears are wide like fans, wearing the sacred thread.

Oh son of Lord Shiva who is of short stature and who removes all obstacles, Lord Vinayaka, I bow at your feet."

It is believed that during the Churning of

oceans [sagara madhanam], [Samudra manthan] was said to take place in this Month.

Mount Mandarachala is worn as churning rod, adding to it lord Vasuki became the rope, to conduct the Sagara madhanam.

During Samudra Manthan, process fourteen different types of things came out while churning the ocean, out of which almost 13 of them where divided among the demons except the fourteenth one. I.e. POISON [halahala], as it was dangerous which came out no one of the entire devas were ready to accept it , and finally Lord Shiva who took the Halahala [Poison] [he drank it] in to his throat. [This is the reason he is also known as Garalam thagina devudu in Telugu]

Since the day of consuming Halahala Lord Shiva was known as Neelakanta [Neelkantha] mean to say Blue Throated person. Post to which Neelkantha is the name associated with Lord Shiva.

To reduce the effect of Halahala Shiva wore the Moon on his head, after this all the gods [devas] started offering the Water to God Shiva to reduce the effect of Halahala [poison] [this is also the reason why most of the Shiva’s pictures depict water on this head.]

AS this happened during the month of Shravana, and lord Shiva has goddess Ganga on his head, people offer Ganges water during this auspicious month, and it is also considered as the most auspicious month to wear Rudraksha

As the Mondays are devoted to officer prayers to lord Shiva, all Mondays of the shravana month Hindu women in the honor of lord Shiva, keep their fast for the entire day.
