Lord Ganesha is also known as Vinayaka (the prominent leader), is the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, literature and worldly success. He is thought to derive from an animistic deity, possibly a Dravidian (aboriginal) sun god. Lord Ganesha is a propitious god, promising success, prosperity, and peace and is invoked before any sort of enterprise. It is his responsibility to decide between success and failure, to remove obstacles or create them as necessary. His pot-belly symbolizes a pitcher full of prosperity, a sort of abdominal cornucopia. In simple words, He is also called Sri Ganapati (leader of people), Buddhividhata ( god of knowledge ), or Vighnahara (god to remove obstacles). He is called Ganapathibecause he is the supreme Lord of the Ganas (Ganas are the embodiments of the organs ofperception – Jnanendriyas – and of action – Karmendriyas). “Ga” means Buddhi (intellect). “Nail means”Vijnana” (wisdom). “Pathi” means master. Hence, another meaning for Ganapathi is master of theintellect and wisdom.

Lord Ganesha Birth Story

Once Lord Shiva left his usual dwelling on Mt.Kailas in the Himalayas, to meditate in one of the caves in the same mountain. The goddess Parvathi was alone at home. On one occasion, she needed someone to gaurd the house when she was going for a bath. Unable to think of an alternative, she used her powers to create a boy from their vex (omkara) (by resisting name om ) She instructed Ganesh to keep strict vigil on the entrance to the house and not to allow anyone into the house. Ganesh obed and stayed on the strictest of strict vigils.
. Ganesh took up his post and undertook his assignment enthusiastically.

In due course the Lord Shiva returned from her meditation and tried to enter. Ganesh, according to his instructions, forbade him entry. Shiva was enraged by Ganesh’s impudence and drew his sword and cut off Ganesh's head.

Parvati emerged to find Ganesh decapitated and flew into a rage. Even though he was immensely powerful Shiva was upset with Parvati’s rage. He swore to make amends by taking the head of the first living thing he found to replace Ganesh’s head. The first animal he came across was an elephant. Accordingly he took the head from the elephant an placed it on Ganesh’s body.

Thus Ganesh is depicted with an elephant’s head. Because of his role as protector of Parvarti's door he is associated, in Hindu culture, with protecting entrances.

Puranic myths about the birth of Ganesha are found in the later Puranas, composed from about 600 CE onwards. References to Ganesha in the earlier Puranas, such as the Vayu and Brahmanda Purnasa are considered to be later interpolations made during the 7th to 10th centuries.
