The Lord of Success The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana puja.

>The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse.

How Ganesha Got His Head The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity, as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Once goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy's head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name 'Ganapati'. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture.

Ganesh and Lord Vishnu One day, Vishnu found out that his Valamburi Shankha had disappeared. He felt himself very annoyed. After some time, he heard the typical sound of a conch far away and recognized immediately that it was his own instrument. The sound came from the Mount Kailash.

He meditated on Lord Shiva who came in front of him and declared that if he wanted to get his conch back, he had first to address a invocation to god Valamburi Ganesh (a Ganesh form with a right-turned trunk). Satva means Satvik means pure, holy or God fearing. A person, who is satvik, has always pure, noble clear thoughts. He is always well behaved well mannered thinking for others. Any type of bad elements could not disturb him. 'Rajogna' means passionate. A person always thinks about what profit he will get if will do anything. He always accepts positive results as per his thinking. If he doesn't achieve it he gets disturb. Could not keep control on his thoughts and mind. 'Tamasi' means hot headed irascible. A person is very hot tempered, selfish, his thoughts and his world are around eating, drinking, sleeping.They hurt to others; never take care for anybodies feelings and duties towards anybody. Lord Ganesha is beyond these three gunas. Lord Ganesha always exists in place of 'Muladhara'. According to the yoga there are seven 'Chakras'(states) in human body. These 'Chakras' are situated in various parts of the body. correct decision power, through the power of kundalini which is in the 'Muladhara'. Lord Ganesha is also known as Vinayaka (the prominent leader), is the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, literature and worldly success. Ganesh obed and stayed on the strictest of strict vigils.

In due course the Lord Shiva returned from her meditation and tried to enter. Ganesh, according to his instructions, forbade him entry. Shiva was enraged by Ganesh’s impudence and drew his sword and cut off Ganesh's head.

Parvati emerged to find Ganesh decapitated and flew into a rage. Even though he was immensely powerful Shiva was upset with Parvati’s rage. He swore to make amends by taking the head of the first living thing he found to replace Ganesh’s head. The first animal he came across was an elephant. Accordingly he took the head from the elephant an placed it on Ganesh’s body.

Thus Ganesh is depicted with an elephant’s head. Because of his role as protector of Parvarti's door he is associated, in Hindu culture, with protecting entrances.

Puranic myths about the birth of Ganesha are found in the later Puranas, composed from about 600 CE onwards. References to Ganesha in the earlier Puranas, such as the Vayu and Brahmanda Purnasa are considered to be later interpolations made during the 7th to 10th centuries.

Lord GaneshGanesh is born of divine parents and is himself a divine being. According to the Hindu mythology, in the snow-capped mountains of Kailash, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, the divine couple, live with their two divine children, Ganesh and his brother Karthik, also known as Karthik. This is the tale of those days when both Ganesh and Karthik were very young. Ganesh being the elder son, was full of patience and wisdom. Karthik, on the other hand, was impish and playful. But both of them were intelligent and powerful. The two brothers had much difference in their physique. While Ganesh had a massive body with a big belly and an elephant's head, young Karthik was a beautiful boy with strong limbs. They were kind to everybody and were loved by all. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi loved their two children and they in turn were devoted to their parents. The Devas (deities) were pleased with the lovely divine children and they worshipped them. But one day, as the Devas talked about the qualities of the brothers, a doubt arose in the mind of one of them. "Who is the wiser of the two brothers?" he asked the others "Ganesh or Karthik?" Soon this doubt spread to all the Devas. All of them were talking and expressing their opinion about the matter. But no one could surely decide upon the matter. As they racked their brains to solve the issue, suddenly, a Deva got an idea. “I know whom to ask!”, said he. As others looked at him curiously, he continued, "Lord Brahma. He is the Creator of the world. He should know the answer, so let's ask him! He can surely solve this doubt." Without any more delay, the Devas rushed to Brahma and asked their Creator about their doubt. Brahma was surprised to see all the deities, together. "Such a pleasant surprise! What brings you here?" The Devas told Brahma about their doubt. "O lord Brahma, who is the wiser brother?", asked they, "Ganesh or Karthik?" "Alas, I do not know!" replied Brahma. "I am the creator of mankind, not divine beings. Ganesh and Karthik were born to the celestial gods Shiva and Parvathi." The Devas were disappointed. Even the Brahma did not know! Then they would not be able to have an answer, after all. Looking at their glum faces, Lord Brahma decided to help them. "It is true that I do not know who is the wiser of the two young Gods", he thought. "But I can probably find it out with the help of my son Narada". Narada, the son of Lord Brahma, was a mischievous sage who was famous for creating disputes. Wherever he went, he created trouble. But if he got away with all his pranks and without getting cursed it was only because the trouble he caused usually ended on a happy note. "Narada, help the Devas. Find the answer to their question," said Brahma after explaining the problem. "Certainly, Father," replied Narada, and his eyes twinkled naughtily, smelling an opportunity to play a prank. Using his magical powers Narada swiftly flew over the white mountains of Kailash and, in no time, arrived at the divine abode of Shiva and Parvathi. He was warmly welcomed by the heavenly couple. Siva and Parvathi"0 Shive, Saviour of the Universe!, O Devi Parvathi !" Narada praised the lord. "I thank you for your warm welcome. It is indeed a pleasant joy and an honour to see you both together as the Divine couple". Everyone knew about Narada's mischievous nature. Shiva understood that Narada was up to some mischief. "Now tell us the truth. I can sense some mischief brewing in your mind. What is the prank you are planning to play on us?" he said jokingly. Narada pretended to be hurt. "You greatly insult me, Lord Shiva! I have just come here to give you a gift," he said in a sorrowful voice. "A gift for me? What is it Narada?", asked Lord Shiva. Narada, hearing the eagerness in Shiva's voice smiled to himself in amusement. He produced a golden mango and gave it to the Lord. "A mango!" exclaimed Shiva. "Now don't say you travelled all the way here to give me this fruit." "It is no ordinary fruit, my Lord," Narada replied. "The taste of this fruit is said to be sweeter than nectar. This is the divine fruit of knowledge that bestows eternal wisdom to those who eat it. "Is it so?" asked Shiva, looking at the mango. He then asked his wife Parvathi to have a bite. "No, stop!" cried Narada. "What are you doing?" Lord Shiva looked at Narada curiously. "Why? Do you want me to eat it without letting Parvathi taste it? I am going to share it with her". Saying so, he turned to share the fruit with his wife, Goddess Parvathi. Narada shook his head in disagreement. "That cannot be done, Lord Shiva. It is a magical fruit, blessed by the sages and Devas. It is not possible to cut the mango into pieces. It should be eaten by a single person as a whole fruit". The divine couple looked at each other. They were confused. Then Lord Shiva shrugged. "If that is the case, let my better half have this fruit. Here Parvathi, you can have this whole mango," he said, offering the mango to his wife. Parvathi was surprised. "Oh no, I don't want it! You are my husband. How can I eat it without you having a taste of it?" she refused. Both Lord Shiva and Narada requested her to eat the fruit but Parvathi steadily declined. "Instead, let one of our children have the fruit," she suggested. "But, how is that possible?" asked Narada slyly. "There is one fruit and two children. Who should be given the fruit - Ganesh or Karthik?" While the elders were talking, Ganesh and Karthik appeared in Kailash. They saw that their parents and Sage Narada were having some serious talk on something. Then Karthik noticed something yellow and round in Narada's hand. “What is Uncle Narada having in his hand ?” Karthik asked to Ganesh. Ganesh was equally curious. “ This is a magical mango, Karthik, "Narada replied, as he heard Karthik's question. "I gave it to your Father but he wanted your Mother to eat it. But she won't have it. She wants to give it to one of you". "A magical mango? I love mangoes!", shouted Karthik, "I want it! I want it!". "No, no, it should come to me. I love mangoes too! I'm the eldest son and the right one to eat the fruit of knowledge," argued Ganesh. Soon the brothers started fighting. The divine parents were perplexed. This is nothing but a mountain out of a molehill. Lord Shiva looked at Narada. "So this is why you came to Kailash! I knew it! I knew there was something in your mind. Well done Narada, you have finally played the trick. This is why you came here. But now that you have created trouble, please solve it. You decide to whom the mango should go to," he said firmly. Narada was delighted that his plan was working so well. "Why don't we could have a competition to settle the matter?" he said with a twinkle in his eye. "The children agreed to Narada’s suggestion. Lord Shiva thought over the matter. "All right, then." said he, "We'll have a contest. Whoever of you goes around the world three times and returns first will get the fruit ," he said to his children. Hearing this, Karthik immediately mounted his vehicle, the peacock. His brother Ganesh was slow and fat. Karthik laughed to himself in glee. He was very certain that he would win. Ganesh too, understood that his vehicle, the mouse, could not compete with the peacock's speed. So he thought for a moment. Suddenly, he got an idea. Ganesh smiled to himself. Karthik flew around the world stopping at all temples and sacred spots on the way and offering his prayers. To his astonishment, he found Ganesh at every major stop. Karthik was puzzled. How did Ganesh manage to be so fast? The reason was the razor-sharp intelligence and the great wisdom of Ganesh. Back in Kailash, Ganesh remembered that his parents Shiva and Parvathi represented the entire universe. Without delay, the young elephant-headed god walked around his parents with great devotion, folding his hands. "Why are you circling us Ganesh?" asked Lord Shiva. Shiva, Parvathi and Ganesh"I'm your son and to me, you two make up my whole world. Why should I go further to win the contest?" replied Ganesh. Shiva was pleased with his elder son's smart answer and gave the magical fruit to him. When Karthik returned after his voyage, he understood what had happened and accepted the superiority of his clever brother Ganesh. The Devas found the answer to their doubt. They praised and blessed Ganesh.

Lord Shiva was overwhelmed by this extreme devotion, and immediately gave the Sudarshan Chakra to Maha Vishnu, and thenceforth Maha Vishnu got the name "lotus eyed" (padmaksha) due to the devotion in offering the eye to make up for a lotus.chakra as a boon from the Lord Almighty.This had been created by Lord Shiva for jalandhara samhara.

Lord Ganesh Visarjan history

As per My study on various Indian ancient religious books . Ganesh Chaturthi was being celebrated as a public event in Pune since the times of Shivaji (1630-80), the founder of the Maratha Empire.Later on in 1893 the full festival color was given by Lokmanya Tilak .The word “visarjan” is derived from the Sanskrit language and has numerous connotations. However, in the context of worship or ‘puja’ it refers to the formal concluding rite, in which the presiding deity is requested to depart from the physical embodiment, specifically utilised for the puja (usually a murti) in which it was initially invoked. This ‘temporary receptacle’ is then discarded, most often by submersion into running water, such as a river or the sea. The act is not necessary for inaugurated (pratishthit) more permanent murtis (deities) as found in places of worship, unless the murti becomes damaged (khandita) thus rendering it unfit for puja. In order to comprehend the practice of visarjan, we must first understand the concept of worship in the Hindu faith. The worship of the Almighty in Sanatan Dharma may be through the ‘Saakaar’ (with form) or ‘Niraakaar’ (formless). The fisherman dredges the lakebed to obtain the clay, to which the potter adds various organic materials from diverse sources. The clay is then sculptured into the murti by the skilled artisan, for which the tailor then fashions vestments. The learned Priest invokes the spirit of the deity at the auspicious hour. The whole process from inception to completion teaches us collaboration and reminds us that we all have important functions in society. In the case of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, it commemorates the creation of Lord Ganapati and he is venerated for ten days with great fervour. According to Puranic texts, the Goddess Gauri moulded his original form from exfoliate of her own skin. She then invoked her consort, Lord Shiva to breathe life into the inanimate sculpture. Hence, the process of creating and worshipping Shri Ganesh in the aforementioned method is highly significant and analogous to his actual genesis described in our scriptures. The Goddess Gauri is represented as mother earth and the clay symbolises her body’s exfoliate from which Ganapati was formed. On the tenth and final day of the festival (Anant Chaturdashi), the transitory embodiment of Ganesh is respectfully requested to depart (visarjan) and then the remaining depiction (now inert) is submersed into water. This idea is common to other belief systems, as the concept of a spirit invoked by the devotees in their time of need entering an inanimate object is found in the story of the Golem ((which means shapeless matter in Hebrew), from the Talmud scriptures. It is related that when the devout have faced dire circumstances, they summon the Golem, formed from the earth through the power of prayer. The Golem is thought to execute their command and rid them of the problem, subsequently returning to the soil. There is profound importance to visarjan and this particular act of worship, Puja.Ganesh Chaturthi festival ends with the Visarjan or immersion of the idols in water. Ganesh visarjan ceremony normally takes place on the Ananta Chaturdasi day, which falls 12 days after the Ganesh Chaturthi day. In 2012, date of Ganesh Visarjan as per tradition is on September 29. But there are people who do the immersion ceremony before the main Visarjan day of Ananta Chaturdasi. Ganesh Visarjan 2012 Dates One and half day Ganesh Visarjan – 20/09/2012 Third Day Ganpati Visarjan – 21/09/2012 Fifth Day Ganesh Visarjan – 23/09/2012 (along with Jyeshta Gauri) Seventh Day Ganesh Visarjan – 25/09/2012 Tenth Day Ganesh Visarjan – 28/09/2012 Anant Chaturdashi last day of Ganesh Visarjan – 29/09/2012 There are no strict rules; usually the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony depends on family tradition. Symbolically, Lord Ganesha visits the home on Ganesh Chaturthi day and it is for the family to decide when they want to give him the farewell. There are several families that perform the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony on the very next day after Vinayaka Chaturthi. Other dates that are chosen for Ganapati immersion are 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th and the Ananta Chaurdasi day after Ganesh Chaturthi. Please make sure that you do not immerse any plastic waste along with the clay Ganesha idol and be proudly part of the eco-friendly Ganesh festival. Use clay idol and immerse only the soluble parts. You can also symbolically sprinkle water on the Ganesh idol. You can also immerse Ganesha in a bucket of water at home and then use it to water plants. If you are using idol of metal, then it can be reused next year.

Pitru Paksha is considered by Hindus to be inauspicious, given the death rite performed during the ceremony, known as Shraddha and tarpan. In southern and Northan India, it falls in the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada Purnima (September–October), beginning with the full moon day (Purnima) that occurs immediately after the Ganesh festival and ending with the ASHWIN Sarvapitri amavasya. it is assumed that Ancestors reside in Pitru–loka, a realm between heaven and earth. This realm is governed by Yama, the god of death, who takes the soul of a dying man from earth to Pitru–loka.Many schools of thought says that OUR Ancestors come to receive Tarpan and (the food which are offered to BARMAN By pitru"s family members and every person who do this Pitru Karma is blessed by his ancestors in from of Shanti, samridhhi.) The food offerings made to the ancestors are usually cooked in silver or copper vessels. The food must include Kheer (a type of sweet rice and milk), lapsi (a sweet porridge made of wheat grains), rice, dal (lentils), the vegetable of spring bean (guar) and a yellow gourd (pumpkin).It is essential that Shraddha is performed by the son—usually the eldest—or male relative of the paternal branch of the family, limited to the preceding three generations. According to Dharmsindhu "one can do 96 Shraddha in a year but out of two(2)Shraddh should be done by everyman. The date of death automatically becomes Shraddh date and second date comes in pitrupaksha". one thing i would like to add Somvati Amavasi, or Somavati Amavasya, is no moon day that falls on a Monday (Somvar) in traditional Hindu calendar. Next Somvati Amavasi is on October 15, 2012 and it is highly auspicious as it is the Mahalaya Pitrupaksha Shradh Amavasi. It is considered a highly auspicious day and millions of people take a holy dip in sacred Rivers like Ganga and Yamuna on the day. Married men and women also perform different pujas and rituals and also undertake Somavara Amavasya Vrat. The Significance of Somvati Amavas was narrated Yudhishtra by Bhisma in the Mahabharata. It is said that who ever takes a bath in the sacred rivers on the day would be prosperous, free of diseases and would be free from grief and sorrow. There is also a popular belief the soul of ancestors will rest in peace if children and relatives take a holy dip in the sacred rivers. Married women take the holy dip for a happy married life and for the long life of their husbands. They also worship the pipal tree on the day. Somavara Amavasya Vrata (fasting) is observed for a long and happy married life by couples. Many devout Hindus also fast on the day and some people only have a single meal. On the day thousands of people take a dip in Ganga at Haridwar, Triveni and Kurukshetra is intimately related to the Aryan civilization and its growth along the Saraswati River and people dip at Pehowa, Phalgu River, also on Somavara Amavasya (Mostly kumbh mela celebrated here . When Ganesha met Saturn Shani faced a major crisis when Lord Ganesha was born. As the Brahmavaivarta Purana tells us, all gods visited Bhagavan Shiva’s abode to bless baby Ganesha, who was sitting on Devi Parvati’s lap. Shani stood at a distance with his eyes facing the ground.
